porc print?

October 31, 2007

I have worked in IT doing various levels of software engineering for about 11 years now. It all started back in 1995. I was working at American Express as a Customer Service Representative supporting prepaid phone cards. One of the VPs (a truly inspired leader) recognized my aptitude for computing due to my constant tinkering with the new Win 95 PCs we just received. I kept playing around with them, blowing things up and learning new tricks. She asked me if I would like to learn programming.

I jumped at the chance. I was really excited. I attended SAS training and began working on the MIS team building reports and a small data warehouse. That was back when a 10 MB file was LARGE! I totally loved it! I drank it in. I found something I was good at. I found something I loved to do.

In that first programming job, I worked with some truly great people in a small team. I learned collaborative development before it was cool. It was so much fun. That is why I call this blog Porc Print. In SAS, there is a procedure called print which prints a listing of data from a SAS dataset. Each procedure is SAS is preceded by the proc statement. Often we mis-type and proc became porc. Prone to silliness, porc became one of the team’s monikers. Everything was porc: porc lunch, porc loin, porc restroom, etc, etc…

Just thinking about porc gets me all nostalgic…

So, porc on you porc-ers! Here’s to many prosperous years of porc blogging!

Here it is. A start at blogging. I am inspired to start doing this. I can contribute to the collaborative knowledge of the “community”, the “collective”. I see the value, so here I am.

My inspiration to get going:
